Introduction

When you purchase a DVD player, depending on your country and model, you will find the DVD player will be locked to a certain region e.g. if you buy a DVD player in the UK from the high street, normally out of the box, it will be restricted to play Region 2 (R2) DVDs.

There are several methods to modify your DVD player which will allow you to play any region DVD. One method available is a sequence of pressing buttons using your DVD remote - Search for your DVD model from the list opposite.

Unfortunately not all DVD players can be modify by this method, some players have to be chipped internally. There are companies that offer this service on the internet, however it is normally necessary to pack and send the player away to be modified or even open the player to make the modification yourself. Nowadays with prices of DVD players as low as they are, it might be cheaper to purchase a multiregion DVD player, with prices starting from just £30-£40 - Click here to find out the latest models

Finally, there is always the option of playing the DVD on your PC or laptop using the VLC Media Player which is free to download and use.

If you familiar with DVD ripping, then you can always rip the DVD, remove the region restriction and format it into another media format e.g AVI, MP4, MKV, etc. These media types can be played on your PC, via a Media Player or even on a USB stick plugged into the side of your TV.

Why hack your DVD player to make it Region Free?

There are many titles that have not been released in certain countries, by unlocking your DVD player, you will have complete access to movie titles available.

Certainly, there are alot more titles that have been released in the USA than the UK.

Of course, this works the other way with plenty of titles available in the UK but not in the USA or any part of the world.

Certain movies are released earlier in some countries than other and by making your DVD player region free, you won't have to wait to get the latest titles.

However when purchasing import DVD from other countries, the DVD may or may have English as an audio track and the cover/menu will be non-English, so double check the details when purchasing.
